Style Session – Ornaments

How to choose the right ornaments for your tree.

Choosing the right ornaments is almost as important as the ribbon selection! We have put together a few tips to take some of the guess work out of the ornament selection process.

  • Size matters: typically the smallest size ornament on your tree should be 3in or 75mm. We tend to prefer starting with100mm or 4in. Ornaments smaller that this can get lost in the tree. If you have a large amount of 2 in or smaller ornaments consider creating ornament clusters. The photo illustrates ornament sizes in a 7.5ft slim tree:

    • 3″ or 75mm
    • 4″ or 100mm
    • 4.75″ or 120mm
    • 6″  or 150mm
  • Think outside of the box: almost ANYTHING can be an ornament! As long as it is not too big or heavy for the tree it can be an ornament . We have used decorative accessories, toys, gift boxes, tree toppers, etc.
  • Variety: mix it up! Use a variety of finishes, shapes, materials, and textures in your ornaments. This variety adds interest to your tree and decor.
  • Odd numbers: YES, odd numbers! When picking up ornaments we always suggest buying in odd numbers. Believe it or not this is what creates a balanced look. 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 for your special pieces.
  • Shatterproof or glass: We suggest BOTH! Each type has its own set of pros and cons. There are certain finishes and techniques that can only be achieved by a beautiful glass ornament. Shatterproof provides the opportunity to add color in a variety of finishes at what is typically a lower price point. Plus the added benefit of it being less likely to break if dropped. Regardless we always suggest investing in quality or whatever style you choose. Higher quality shatterproof ornaments will have uniformity in the finish, less likely to “dent” if dropped, and are often pre wired.
  • Attaching ornaments to the tree: NO ornament hooks or organza ribbons please! If you are looking for a high end designer look you MUST wire your ornaments onto the tree! This also ensures your ornaments are secure on the tree.
